"Think Friends with a heavy Russian accent." This is how the Wall Street Journal describes the novel titled Still Here. I love it. What a perfect description!
Author Lara Vapnyar no doubt draws from her experience moving from Moscow to New York to write this novel. It's the story of four Russian friends who relocate to America with dreams of wealth and love. Social media, they believe, is the key to both.
This novel is well written, a little bit erotic, and has perfect pacing. The characters are not necessarily the most likeable, but they're interesting and well developed. I found myself rooting for them.
It is always difficult for me to recommend a book with sexual content or language, and this book has both. Read with discretion if these areas are problematic for you.
