Ok, so I'll be up front here. I'm nerdy. I love board games of all kinds (though German made are a particular favorite), and I will always giggle at a good pun. I thought this game would be a lot of fun. And I was right. Sort of.
The quality of the game is pretty good, though the cards are a bit flimsier than I expected. It includes 200 cards (for plenty of gameplay) and a few other goodies, pictured. The game fits compactly in one small box so, BONUS!, it would be easy to travel with. Want to know what counts as a pun? Don't worry, they cover that too. Creativity is strongly encouraged.
The game is almost two in one. Quick pun (which is really just telling silly jokes from the back of the cards and seeing who can come up with an answer the fastest) is one part (winning gains you extra time) and the other part uses the green and white prompt cards. With the prompt cards each player is given a certain amount of time to write a pun which will be submitted anonymously. The one reading the cards chooses her favorite one. (Think Apples to Apples.) The first to win ten pairs of cards gets a prize of the host's choice.
When my friends and I all sat down to try it out, we just ended up staring blankly at each other saying, "This is hard." None of us could come up with any puns!! So after awhile we just started flipping through the cards to try and find matches that would lend themselves to obvious puns.
My husband, being a Pastor, was particularly happy when he finally thought of one combining religion and driving. "What kind of car would Jesus drive? A Christler!" It's funny, you know it is! :)
My friends and I decided it's a fun game to have in our mix, but it's not going to replace Dominion, Catan, Robo Rally, or any of our other more strategic games any time soon.
Punderdome is currently on Amazon for $12, normally retailing for $20. I think $12 is a great price point so snatch it up!
I received a complimentary copy of this game from bloggingforbooks.com in exchange for my honest review. Thanks for the fun game!
